Woman accused of killing in-laws with toxic

An Australian woman, Erin Patterson, is currently on trial for allegedly poisoning her former in-laws with a meal containing deadly mushrooms.(people.com) The Incident In July 2023, Patterson hosted a lunch at her home in Leongatha, Victoria, serving beef Wellington to her former in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66. All three guests died from organ failure shortly after the meal. Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, survived after a liver transplant. Patterson has pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and one of attempted murder. (apnews.com, news.com.au)
Patterson's Testimony During her testimony, Patterson admitted the dish contained death cap mushrooms but claimed the poisoning was accidental. She stated that she sourced most of the mushrooms from local supermarkets and an Asian grocer, and had foraged wild mushrooms since 2020. She used a dehydrator to mix wild and store-bought mushrooms in the same container. Patterson claimed she was drawn to exotic mushrooms for their flavor and had previously consumed them without illness. (apnews.com, people.com)
Prosecution's Argument Prosecutors argue that Patterson intentionally served the poisonous meal. They point to her serving herself from a different plate, disposing of the dehydrator used to prepare the mushrooms, and allegedly faking a cancer diagnosis to prevent her children from attending the lunch. Authorities also allege that she had attempted to poison her ex-husband, Simon Patterson, on three previous occasions. (people.com)
Trial Status The trial is ongoing at the Latrobe Valley Courthouse in Morwell, Victoria. Patterson faces life imprisonment if convicted. She is expected to continue her testimony in the coming days. (news.com.au, apnews.com)
